Boyd Chemi-Clean
Price:  $19.99

Cynobacteria is usually encouraged with the presence of nitrate and ammonia, which are both fixed forms of nitrogen. Chemi-clean helps clean and remove this problem algae through its own unique process. Most other red slime removers use purely antibiotics, namely erythromycin to take care of the algae. The use of such substances with in your aquarium can have disastrous effects upon your nitrifying bacteria and cause your tank to crash, killing the inhabitants of your aquarium.

The use of chemi-clean not only as a problem solver, when red slime is present, but as a regular maintenance procedure will help keep your water crystal clear and your tank free of unwanted cynobacteria.

"Captive Purity and Vertex Refractometers "

"RF-1 Measuring Instruments/ Refractometer

Maintaining a stable salinity is one of the most important aspects of reef tank husbandry. Gone are the days when the serious hobbyist relied on Hydrometers to keep tabs on this crucial parameter. Now these vital measurements are easily monitored with the Vertex™ Refractometer.

Easy to Read Each Vertex™ Refractometer features our Clear View oversized display to ensure the easiest, most accurate readings possible in two scales (±1.0% salinity and ±0.001 specific gravity).

Vertex™ Refractometers also feature Automatic Temperature Calibration (ATC). Simply put, the unit will self-adjust all samples to the proper reading temperature, increasing the ease of use. Additionally, the insulated, non-slip rubber grip will keep external sources of heat, such as hand warmth, from interfering with an accurate sample reading.

Robust Construction Vertex™ Refractometers have an all-metal body housing for added durability. A large rubber hood both provides additional protection to the eyepiece and prevents foreign light from entering the unit body.

Easy to Use It takes less than a minute to use the Vertex™ Refractometer. Simply place a few drops of water on the refracting lens and look through the eyepiece and take note of the boundary between blue and white. That's it! You now have an accurate measurement of your tank's salinity.

HERBTANA
  • Natural treatment for fresh or saltwater aquarium fish
  • Effectively treats numerous aquarium parasite diseases
  • Herbal alternative to harsh, chemical anti-parasite medications

Rethink and take the natural approach to parasite disease treatment. Microbe-Lift Herbtana is a unique herbal expellant that provides safe control of parasitic skin flukes (gyrodactylus), gill flukes (dactylogyrus), ich (ichthyophthirius multifillis), oodinum, costia (ichthyobodo necater), chilonella and trichodina. Traditional aquarium medications commonly rely on biocides to kill parasites. Though effective, these harsh chemicals often affect non-target organisms including beneficial nitrifying bacteria. Nontoxic and biodegradable Herbtana does not affect nitrifying bacteria. When used as directed, Herbtana is safe for all saltwater, freshwater, and brackish water aquarium fish. Also reef-safe and safe for plants. 16 oz treats 236 gallons for 10 days.

Herbtana causes the removal or dropping of parasites from their host. During treatment, parasites are unable to return to the host and starve. While Microbe-Lift Herbtana does not directly kill parasites, it is ultimately responsible for parasite death.

Efficacy of Algaefix® Marine
in the Laboratory and Aquarium

Introduction
Excess algae growth in saltwater aquariums is unsightly. Algae can over-run delicate corals and live rock in reef aquaria. While copper sulfate has been used in fish-only aquariums, it adds undesirable heavy metals to the aquarium and cannot be used with invertebrates. No safe and effective algaecide has been available for use in all marine aquariums. A new algaecide, ALGAEFIX Marine, was developed for algae control in marine aquariums including reef aquariums containing inverts such as corals and shrimp. Extensive test data proving effective algae control and safety for marine fish and invertebrates was submitted to the United States Environmental Protection Agency for review. After the review process, ALGAEFIX Marine was granted approval for use in all saltwater aquariums including reef aquariums.

Methods
Four marine algae species were selected for the test. The bluegreen algae Spirulina major and Oscillatoria sp., form red mats in marine aquariums and are commonly referred to as “red slime algae.” The green alga, Cladophora sp., form filamentous “hair algae” growth. The diatom Cyclotella sp. causes brown patches on aquarium glass and gravel. The test procedure is based on the Pure Culture Technique [EPA Performance Guidelines, Subdivision G: 92-20 (e)]. • Algal species were cultured under artificial lights for three weeks • 300 50-milliliter flasks were filled with sterilized culture media • The flasks were inoculated with the marine algae and placed under artificial lighting and agitation. • Half of the flasks were treated with ALGAEFIX Marine and half were untreated controls. Three lots of ALGAEFIX Marine were tested • Flasks were observed for three weeks and evaluated for algae control • “Percent Algae Control” was calculated based on growth ratings

Results
  • ALGAEFIX Marine controlled:
    • 100% of the Spirulina major culture
    • 98% of the Oscillatoria culture
    • 100% of the Cladophora culture
    • 94% of the Cyclotella culture
Aim
To test the effectiveness of ALGAEFIX Marine for the control of excess algal growth in saltwater aquariums.
Before treatement: Filamentous Algae
growing on live rock
After 3 weeks of treatment: Filamentous
algae is under control
Discussion
ALGAEFIX Marine has been proven to control 94-100% of the algal species tested. In addition to the laboratory testing described above, ALGAEFIX Marine has been thoroughly tested, over several years, in saltwater fish tanks and reef aquariums. It has been demonstrated that long-term use of ALGAEFIX Marine is safe for marine fish, invertebrates and even sensitive corals containing symbiotic algae. ALGAEFIX Marine has been proven to have no effect on water chemistry, fish, or invertebrates.

Protecting Corals from Predatory Flatworms

Parasitic marine flatworms are a common problem in reef aquariums. The flatworms enter the aquarium on live rock and coral specimens. Once in the aquarium, flatworms multiply, over-run the aquarium, and begin damaging coral tissue. Brown flatworms usually hide in live rock, but are visible without a microscope. Acropora and Pocillopora flatworms, however, are difficult to see. These worms prefer the tissue of short-polyp species, such as Staghorn types. Flatworms can devastate a reef aquarium if not quickly brought under control.

METHODS
Flatworms were collected from a reef aquarium and placed in beakers containing saltwater.
  • Two 600 ml beakers were filled with 400 ml of aquarium water
  • 45 flatworms were placed in each beaker
  • One beaker was an untreated control.
  • One beaker was treated with 4 ml of MELAFIX MARINE, as per label directions when used as a coral dip.
  • After three minutes, the flatworms were examined and photographed.

AIM
To demonstrate the effectiveness of MELAFIX MARINE for the control of parasitic flatworms.

RESULT
• Upon being treated with MELAFIX MARINE, the flatworms convulsed and began moving abnormally. • Treated flatworms were dead in three to five minutes after treatment. • Internal body fluids (protoplasm) of the MELAFIX treated worms leaked out of the worms and into the water. • After 24 hours, all of the untreated worms remained alive and moved around the beaker.
Photograph 1: Untreated flatworms in a beaker containing saltwater.
Photograph 2: Dead flatworms after treatment with MELAFIX MARINE.   Note leaking protoplasm.
Discussion
Marine flatworms are considered nuisance species, and can cause severe damage to corals kept in reef aquariums. The best method of control is to prevent the introduction of flatworms into the aquarium. Live rock and corals should be treated for flatworms before introduction into the aquarium. MELAFIX MARINE, used as a short term dip or bath treatment, will kill parasitic flatworms in live rock and on coral and help prevent flatworm infestation in a reef aquarium.
